Summer Camp

Beyond Clueless OST

Written and directed by Charlie Lyne, and narrated by cult teen star Fairuza Balk, Beyond Clueless is a dizzying journey into the mind, body and soul of the teen movie, as seen through the eyes of over 200 modern coming-of-age classics. Already mutual appreciators of each other’s work, Lynne and Summer Camp had long wanted to collaborate, and when the director sent the band the pitch for the film they leapt at the chance to compose its soundtrack. As teen movie and pop culture fans - the first few tracks Summer Camp posted online were peppered with movie samples - the band were the natural choice. “Charlie would send us long collages and mood boards of scenes from films and ask us to match the emotion onscreen,” explains Summer Camp’s Elizabeth Sankey. “He then cut the final film to the music we created, so it was a real collaborative process.” “There are a couple of songs on the OST - ‘Beyond Clueless’ and ‘Losing It’ - that could have fitted nicely on either of our previous albums, but we’re also exploring new musical ground and the instrumentals are the first we’ve ever released. We composed some of our most straightforward open music ever with ‘Swimming Pool’, ‘Learn To Love Yourself’ and ‘Graduation’, as well as the most aggressive and mechanical track we've ever laid down in ‘Weak Walls’.” The film received its world premiere at South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in March. Summer Camp will play a handful of special performances of the OST, and have announced three events, in Sheffield, London and at Latitude Festival, where they will live-score the film: Summer Camp - Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey - formed in 2009 and released their debut album ‘Welcome To Condale’ to critical acclaim in 2011. Their self-titled second album followed in September 2013 to rave reviews. Recorded with legendary producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur), ‘Summer Camp’ is an eleven-track marvel, a confident, fully-realised body of work that befits the cliche ‘all killer, no filler’. Following the album’s release, the band embarked on their most extensive tour yet, spending the final three months of 2013 playing sold out shows across Europe.
