Michael Hurley

Armchair Boogie

Recorded back in 1969. Armchair Boogie has to stand as something of a classic as far as outsider Americana goes. There's a quintessential authenticity to Hurley's writing and his delivery never fails to drag you deep into his unique musical universe. In recent years Hurley has become a major cult figure and you may have heard a variety of musicians from subsequent generations covering his music - for example both Violent Femmes and Cat Power have had a go at 'Werewolf' (indeed, Chan Marshall recorded two more cuts from this LP, 'Sweedeedee' and 'Troubled Water' on The Covers Album) and modern day folksters like Espers and Vetiver can oft be heard belting out the man's songs. Thankfully Hurley's still a songwriter and in 2007, the Andy Cabic / Devendra Banhart curated Gnomonsong label released a brand new album (titled Ancestral Swamp), but for any newcomers to the party you'd have to say that Armchair Boogie is the place to start listening. Very highly recommended.
