Fish Tank

Fish Tank

Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival, Fish Tank seemed to be somewhat overlooked by mainstream british cinemas. The story follows Mia a volatile 15 year old living on a rough Essex estate with her single mum and younger sister. When her mother starts seeing a new man Mia finds it difficult to know how to feel towards the first male to enter her life. I dont really care for most 'gritty' british films due to their emphasis on 'lad' culture, this however is a breath of fresh air mainly due to the performance of Katie Jarvis as Mia, in her only acting role, being cast by an agent who saw her having a heated row with her boyfriend at a train station!
