Howling Bells

The Loudest Engine

It’s easy to tell this third album from purveyors of fine Australian Gothic was written whilst touring America’s southern states. It infiltrates each expansive song like stray sand. Spiritual landscape narratives haunted by the spirits of the Nevada desert are conjured with propulsive percussion, scuzzy guitars and bluesy refrains. ‘Charlatan’ is akin to early PJ Harvey and ‘Gold Suns, White Guns’ is surprisingly Kate Bush-like, with its distinct vocals and twinkling strings. Overall though it’s most reminiscent of the woozy narcotics and minor key shifts of Queens Of The Stone Age. Honest, uncompromising, raw and restless, it’s a rock album of some distinction.
