Observator

When the Raveonettes began working on new material late last year with mentor Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, the Go-Go's) in California, they took only seven days to finish the songs that make up their sixth album, Observator. The first single, "Observations," explores familiar territory with small doses of fuzzed-out, Jesus and Mary Chain-style reverb built on a haunting piano riff and lyrics to match.

"'Observations' is sort of the blueprint for this album," singer/guitarist Sune Rose Wagner, one half of the Danish duo, tells Rolling Stone. "It captures a universal feeling of the outsider in his daily life, his longing and losses in love and his primordial instinct of survival."

Wagner, who was inspired by the simplistic musical patterns of the Doors, was also enthusiastic about experimenting with new instruments. "It was during these sessions that a new dimension to the Raveonettes began to develop; it's the first time we've ever used the piano and what a glorious, gloomy sound it makes. We knew immediately that it was something we needed to expand on. But make no mistake, Observator is still a gorgeous guitar album."
